Product Description : Kurt Cobain – About a Son (2007)

Kurt Cobain was deeply suspicious of journalists, but he trusted Rolling Stone’s Michael Azerrad enough to give him unprecedented access during the writing of the book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana. Consisting entirely of Cobain’s never-before-heard musings and recollections recorded by Azerrad and laid on top of newly shot footage of the places that he lived, Kurt Cobain: About A Son offers an intimate portrait of the rocker’s troubled formative years and meteoric rise to stardom. The result is the story of one of rock’s greatest icons as it’s never been told before.

Additional audio from the Kurt Cobain interviews
Behind-the-scenes featurette

Following in the deeply idiosyncratic footsteps of Last Days, About a Son plays more like autobiography than documentary. Gus Van Sant’s feature extrapolates moments from the life of Kurt Cobain (with Michael Pitt as a musician named Blake), while A.J. Schnack’s non-fiction film adheres closer to the facts, but advances a more radical Koyaanisqatsi-like approach. First off, Cobain supplies the narration, but the filmmaker avoids pictures of the alternative icon until the end. (He culled the voice-over from interviews conducted by author Michael Azerrad for Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana.) Beyond-the-grave narration isn’t a new concept–see Tupac: Resurrection–but Schnack (Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns) ups the ante by excluding talking heads, concert footage, and other staples of the genre. Instead, he uses still and time-lapse photography to explore Cobain’s Northwest, i.e. Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle. The artist’s unguarded reflections create a sense of intimacy as specific locations illustrate his words. Conversely, the lack of portraiture and self-penned music generates a feeling of absence. The soundtrack combines an ambient score from producer Steve Fisk and Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard with Cobain favorites, like David Bowie, Cheap Trick, and the Vaselines (available on a separate CD). For more specifics, interested parties can always turn to tomes by Azerrad, Gina Arnold, Charles R. Cross, and Everett True. About a Son doesn’t presume to provide a definitive portrait, but Schnack’s rigorous avoidance of convention results in an experience far more dream-like than depressing. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

This review is from: Kurt Cobain – About a Son (DVD)

It is hard to find a single figure that looms larger in recent rock history than Kurt Cobain. It’s harder still to come across an artist whose true nature was so obscured, even distorted, by his own legend. About a Son, based on interviews with Come as You Are author Michael Azzerad, offers a rare, sincere, and deeply moving glimpse into Cobain’s private world. In the process, it reveals a side of the late musician often left out of sensationalized media portrayals of his life, drug use, and tragic end–he is perceptive, thoughtful, and quietly articulate, reflecting on his experiences with a candor unmatched in other interviews.

What makes the film unusual among documentaries is director AJ Schnack’s determination to stay out of the way and allow Cobain to tell his own story. Eschewing the typical documentary format in which the viewer’s gaze is focused on the subject, About a Son creates the sense of looking out through Kurt’s eyes, seeing the images he would have seen and hearing the music he listened to. There are no Nirvana songs–just the music that inspired and influenced Cobain–and the visuals are a montage of evocative images of Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle. Listening to Kurt’s sleepy, gravelly narration (most of the interviews were conducted in the wee hours of the morning) against the backdrop of these images elicits the feeling of taking a long stroll and talking intimately with an old friend.

As you stroll through Washington streets slicked with rain, passing floating bundles of Aberdeen timber, punk rock Olympia kids, and the city lights of Seattle, Kurt talks about his parents’ divorce, his lifelong sense of isolation, the unexpected consequences of fame, and his unabashed devotion to his wife and daughter. He tells of a life clearly fraught with pain and depression, yet fueled with creative passion. The personality he reveals is one of contradictions: the desire for recognition vs. the desire for solitude; deep concern for humanity vs. revulsion toward humanity’s darker side; a harsh reality vs. a longing for the simplicity of childhood.

About a Son is as much a portrait of the Pacific Northwest as it is a rendering of Kurt Cobain. Alongside breathtaking cinematography, Cobain’s narrative shows that many of these private contradictions were the product of a deep-seated ambivalence toward his environment. As a child, he was alternately comforted and stifled by small-town Aberdeen; as a budding artist, he was nurtured by Olympia’s creativity, yet felt like an outsider; in his Seattle days, he helped place the city on the musical map while deriding media hype about the “grunge scene.”

As the lone figure of Cobain fades at the film’s end, one cannot help but feel the loss of an extraordinary artist–and an extraordinary individual–as he vanishes from sight.

“The staggering energy and intensity radiating from the stage never let up… Cobain’s ravaged pop songs coming off like some dream marriage of the Sex Pistols and the Beatles, borne on bracing waves of distorted guitar noise.”

NIRVANA’S LEGENDARY NEVER-BEFORE-RELEASED 1992 READING CONCERT

Ranked #1 in Kerrang Magazine’s “100 Gigs That Shook The World” and voted as “Nirvana’s #1 Greatest Moment” by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana’s historic August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the UK’s Reading Festival is one of the most bootlegged concerts in the annals of rock n roll. Now, fans will have an opportunity to own a pristine copy of that entire performance — color-corrected video from the original film with audio sourced from the original multi-track masters. Nirvana Live At Reading will be issued in a limited edition CD+DVD Deluxe Edition as well as DVD-only, CD-only configurations on November 3, 2009, followed by a 2LP version on November 17, 2009.

This review is from: Nirvana: Live at Reading (DVD)

In a word – amazing! Live At Reading serves as a vibrant reminder as to why Nirvana belongs in the pantheon of great rock bands, and how they may likely be the last great and meaningful band to emerge in the past twenty years. Live At Reading captures the band at a crossroads – just a year before in 1991, the band played the very same festival, but was relegated to an afternoon performance somewhere in the middle of the multi-day, multi-band gathering. Just a year later, they would be arriving as conquering anti-heroes, having in the space of a year, accomplished the small feat of changing the face of music. Now the festivals headliners, Nirvana – and particularly Kurt Cobain, had become the subject of much public attention, and amidst a cloud of rumours and innuendo stirred up by the press, the appearance was as much anticipated for the spectacle as it was for the expected performance, a performance that would be the bands final in the U.K. What is captured on tape, hardly comes across as a band in its final moments – Live At Reading explodes with ferocity and moments of sheer brilliance. Granted it has its less than sparkling moments, but those are few and far between, and seem more a by-product of a band at odds with its own success, and adding verity to event.

The moments where Nirvana truly shine are too many to mention – the performance of “School” displays the skills and sound which made Dave Grohl such a key addition to the band. His drumming matches the visceral attack of Kurt’s vocals, turning the performance into a thundering pummel that churns the crowd into a sea of screaming bodies. Other highlights include blistering performances of tracks from Nevermind, including “Breed,” and “Lithium,” the latter of which induces the crowd into a most memorable sing-a-long segment, serving to illustrate both the bands immense popularity at the time, and the potency of its songs.

Other highlights include those from the then forthcoming In Utero album, including the first ever performance of “Tourette’s” and the soon to become classic “All Apologies.”

On the technical side, the 5.1 Surround mix mastering done by Bob Ludwig is nothing short of incredible. Having been fortunate enough to work from the original multi-track masters, the sound freed from those tapes is a revelation, and reason enough for any lagging fans still listening in simple stereo, to make the leap to a surround system. The picture quality is also a quantum leap forward, having owned a bootleg copy for years, the improvement is clearly visible. Live At Reading is a must have for any Nirvana fan, casual or core.

Watching a Nick Broomfield documentary (Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer, Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam) makes one not just want to shower, but to scrub oneself raw like Meryl Streep did in Silkwood. Going where even the tabloids fear to tread, the controversial Kurt & Courtney could also be called Courtney and Me. Investigating the apparent suicide of grunge icon Cobain, Broomfield runs into a formidable obstacle, namely Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love. She blocked permission for him to use any of Cobain’s music and ultimately got the film yanked from the Sundance Film Festival. Can’t really blame her, as Broomfield follows the lead of a motley crew of conspiracy theorists, grudge-carrying former boyfriends, and estranged parents who suggest that Cobain was actually murdered at Love’s behest. For those who watched bemused as Love reinvented herself as a Hollywood glamour girl, this is luridly entertaining stuff–albeit suspect. How much stock to put in S&M rocker El Duce (where does Bloomfield find these people?), who claims to have been offered money by Love to kill Cobain, and then offers to tell more if Broomfield will buy him a beer? Broomfield paints a much more sympathetic portrait of Cobain. In the film’s most touching moment, an aunt plays a tape of a 2-year-old Cobain singing. “He’s a prettly loud little guy,” she says. These scenes will be nirvana for Cobain fans. –Donald Liebenson

From The New Yorker

Nick Broomfield’s chilling documentary, set in the netherworlds of Seattle and other places in the Pacific Northwest, in which we get to meet some drug-addled or merely bizarre folk who believe that Courtney Love, the raucous post-feminist icon, may have killed her husband, Kurt Cobain. The anti-Courtney revelations are interesting but inconclusive: Rozz Rezabeck, a former rocker and boyfriend of Courtney’s, is by far the most amusing figure; Hank Harrison, Love’s father, who reveals that he bought pit bulls to discipline his adolescent daughter, is by far the most frightening. The true circumstances of Cobain’s death remain cloudy, but one comes away from the film unnerved by the distance travelled: we begin in a sleepy Washington town, with a little blond boy who likes to sing Beatles songs, and end up lost in a haze of heroin. -Daphne Merkin

This review is from: Kurt and Courtney (DVD)

I think that you have to be a Nirvana fan to TOTALLY like this documentary. It isn’t one of the best documentaries that I have seen but it is definitely a raw piece of work.

Most of the people involved in Kurts life that are depicted here are rather seedy and burnt out but that’s part of the “beauty” of this film. It is an unflinching look at , not just Kurt and Courtney , but also the people who were in some way or another involved in their lives and you see them , warts and all. Although “El Duce” is a creep you have to wonder about his claims of Courtney paying him to kill Kurt. He could have obviously been lying and he is a creep but his responses to Nick’s questions seem direct , candid and sincere. It makes you wonder.
The interview with “the nanny” was slow but somewhat revealing. Her general believe seems to be that Coutney didn’t kill Kurt but she may have drove him to suicide. And the girl , Amy ,(wearing too much lipstick) seem to be just full of bolony.

The one upstanding person in this film is Kurt’s aunt Mary. She is a person who you would’ve nevered figured to be related to Kurt Cobain. She played an audio tape of a 2 year old Kurt singing a song and referred to it as “early Nirvana”. That was very cool.

There are pictures and never before seen home footage of Kurt in this film. One home video is of Kurt arriving at a Christmas party with his girlfriend in 1987. There is an interview of Kurt talking about his new found wealth and fame and also talking about having love in his life.(no pun intended)But the footage that sticks in my mind the most is the footage of Kurt at some sort of picnic it seems sitting on the ground staring across a creek while kids play around him. A little girl picks up her doll that is laying behind him and as she picks it up Kurt just looks over his shoulder at her. The camera gradually zooms in on Kurt , freezes , then fades to black. The clip isn’t sharp because it is a home video but you see this thin man with the long blond hair , dark sweater , and worn out jeans and you can quickly tell that this is Kurt Cobain ; the grunge god and symbol of a generation just looking bored like his thoughts are somewhere else. And the movie ends with a smiling picture of Kurt as a child. That final segment of the film was very sentimental to me especially knowing the fate of that smiling kid. It was sad and rather haunting.

This film does lean to accusing Love of killing Kurt but there is nothing here that gives concrete evidence. The interview with Courtney and Nick getting in front of the audience and denouncing Love at the ACLU awards dinner reminds me of Michael Moorer’s pursuit of Roger Smith in “Roger & Me”; the documenter , finally , face to face with his antagonist. But “Roger & Me” is a far superior piece of work than this film.

When rock superstar Kurt Cobain was found dead in April 1994, the police quickly labeled the death a suicide. In “Who Killed Kurt Cobain?”, two award-winning investigative journalists raise explosive questions whose answers may point to the possibility that the rock superstar was actually murdered of photos, many in color.

Editorial Reviews : Who Killed Kurt Cobain? The Mysterious Death of an Icon

From Publishers Weekly

On April 8, 1994, Kurt Cobain’s corpse was discovered in his Seattle home. By the summer of 1996, rumors of cover-up and murder were making the rounds in coffee shops and rock clubs and on the Internet, with most fingers pointing at Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love. Music journalists Halperin and Wallace fill about half their pages with a serviceable joint biography of Cobain and Love, though the meat of the book is their investigation into the rock star’s death. The essence of the crime theory, as promulgated by Tom Grant, a private investigator initially hired by Love herself, is that Cobain was murdered with a fatal injection of pure heroin, and then shot. The question of why anyone, after injecting a known junkie with a fatal dose of heroin, would bother to shoot him is the most prominent problem with the theory. The authors cite other, perhaps more provocative data, including statements by a man who claims he was hired to kill Cobain. The motive the authors uncover seems more plausible: When the two rock stars wed, they report, Love, the more successful of the pair at the time, made Cobain sign a prenuptial agreement. But now Cobain was worth a fortune, and there is some evidence that Cobain was going to divorce Love. The evidence isn’t solid, and in fact much of what’s presented here is wispy, but the authors certainly seem to have dug hard, making this, while not a good bet for serious true crime fans, manna for rumor-mongers and for those who find horror behind the ironic names of Nirvana and Love.
From Booklist

Just who did kill Kurt Cobain? Was it really Cobain himself, through careless use of drugs and intentional aim with a rifle? Or was it Courtney Love, Cobain’s extravagant and chameleon-like wife? Or could it have been someone she hired–a professional assassin or lucky amateur? At this point one can’t tell, yet the compelling chain of events that Halperin and Wallace expose constitutes evidence of a plausible alternative explanation to the official verdict of suicide. Cobain’s short life (he was 27 when he died) was fraught with anguish–broken family, lost love and a desperate search for its return, youthful rebellion, homelessness, drugs. Reality surpassed Cobain’s dreams, yet even when he became a millionaire rock star, his past wouldn’t let go, and he continued to drown depression in heavy drug use. Halperin and Wallace have written a very good and interesting book, sans hero worship, for fans of pop music and murder mysteries alike, one that soberly lays out the case for thinking this pop icon’s death may not be an open-and-shut case.
‘A powerful and worthwhile artefact that details his life and honours his memory without betraying his fans.’ TIME OUT

About the Author

The editors of Rolling Stone. Contributors: Grant Alden, Lorraine Ali, Michael Azerrad, Anthony DeCurtis, Alec Foege, David Fricke, Donna Gaines, Mikal Gilmore, Greil Marcus, Chris Mundy, Kim Neely, Ann Powers, Ira Robbins, Neil Strauss.

This review is from: Cobain (Rolling Stone) (Paperback) (1)

i bought this book a couple months back thinking, “this is just gonna be another brief book about kurt’s life. the same material every other book has.” i didn’t think that i’d actually get through the whole thing, cos i had heard his story over and over again anyways. i thought it’d be boring. man was i wrong! i couldn’t put it down. halfway through the book, i realized this wasn’t just any plain biography; this was a big colage of kurt’s life: his music, his family, his drug abuse, and his sad death. some people think that kurt was just another junky-musician. but this book proves far beyond a doubt that he was so much more. he was a creative and influential person to all of us (even though some people choose to deny it). after reading this book, i came to the conclusion that i didn’t need to buy any other books about kurt cobain, or nirvana, because all the imformation i needed was right in my hands.

This review is from: Cobain (Rolling Stone) (Paperback) (2)

Ironic that the best of many books released in the months after Cobain’s death would be a collection from Rolling Stone, alleged promoters of the “corporate rock” he battled against. The editors of this collection of RS articles wisely chose to make it a true memorial, remembering the past, the good and the bad, while not pontificating uselessly on the meaning of Cobain’s suicide. Many have tried in vain to be artfully profound in the wake of Kurt’s death, magazine writers and newspapermen. This kind of purple prose is luckily absent from COBAIN, and the majority of the articles are very well written. Also included are many wonderful photographs; Kurt with his daughter, the infamous bridge from “Something in the Way”, Kurt with a kitten perched on his shoulder, the beautiful cover, Kurt surrounded by Stargazers during Nirvana’s Unplugged performance. In the rush to publish something in the summer of 1994, the market was saturated with books on Nirvana and Cobain. This one was the best and still is. It leaves questions unanswered, as well it should.

With all the celebrations going on for the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” recently, it was only a matter of time before Hole frontwoman Courtney Love would weigh in on her husband, Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Love exclaimed that she’s still extremely angry about Cobain’s 1994 suicide.

“If [Cobain] came back right now I’d have to kill him, for what he did to us. I’d f***ing kill him. I’d f*** him, and then I’d kill him,” said Love. “He tried to kill himself three times! He OD’d at least five times.”

Two years ago, their daughter Frances Bean emancipated herself from her mother, which is something that continues to be a source of frustration for Love.

“All I can feel is how much I love her,” notes Love. “I’d give anything to hear the sound of her heels walking down the hall past my bedroom.”

Love also claims that she’s owed more than $250 million in revenue from Nirvana, explaining that she and Cobain had money problems even when he was alive.

“We could never find our money!” said Love. “We had $135,000 in our bank account. They said that if he would go do Lollapalooza he would make $11 million. … Do you think Kurt would have killed himself if he had known he had $54 million?”

Love’s interview will be featured in the November issue of Vanity Fair, available on newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on October 6 and nationally October 11.

Written by a high-school acquaintance of Kurt Cobain, this biography in the new American Rebels series is an unusually intimate account of the rock legend. A resident of Cobain’s hometown, Burlingame supports his well-researched portrait with personal interviews with Cobain’s family, friends, and other local acquaintances. His descriptions of Cobain’s darker struggles, such as drug use, are frank, and he occasionally interrupts the text with a few didactic cautions about drug use. He also delves into controversial theories about Cobain’s death, including a key investigator’s belief that Cobain was murdered. Thorough endnotes, a well-rounded bibliography, and a discography conclude this detailed title, which stands out from many series biographies because of its insider’s appreciation for the musician and his legacy.
This review is from: Kurt Cobain: Oh Well, Whatever, Nevermind (American Rebels)

I was waiting to buy this book until I read some reviews, then I saw a review online at the Nirvana Fan Club and decided to give it a shot. This book is written for an audience of teens and older so I wasn’t expecting any new stories and was surprised that there are. There’s a saddening story about Kurt’s mom’s reaction told by someone who was with her just after she heard about Kurt’s death. There are some photos I’ve never seen before and pictures of two things Kurt drew, which I found most fascinating and there’s an update on a memorial committee in Kurt’s hometown that’s trying to honor him there. The author knew Kurt when they were younger and the book says he is part of that group.

The book is a high-quality hardback and isn’t dumbed down like I thought it might be. If you want to know every detail of Kurt’s life, there are other books out there that do the job better (though often in error or by making things up). But if you want to know “just the facts” and learn some new stories along the way you should buy this. I was pleasantly surprised with its quality and was happy to add it to my Cobain collection.

An unparalleled look inside the brilliant mind of one of America’s most revered rock legends, Cobain Unseen collects previously unseen artifacts and photographs from the estate’s archives to form a fascinating portrait of the creativity, madness, and genius of Kurt Cobain. Personal items and photographs take readers deeper inside Cobain’s life than they’ve ever been before, and interactive features, such as Kurt’s handwritten sticker-sheet of Nirvana name tags, facsimiles of unseen journal pages, and gatefolds of his graffiti-embellished guitars make this an essential keepsake. An audio CD showcasing spoken-word material by Cobain, some of it never before released, will be included. Accompanying the previously unpublished images and memorabilia is a compelling biographical narrative by New York Times-bestselling author Charles R. Cross.

This review is from: Cobain Unseen (Hardcover)

Personally I thought Charles R. Cross has wrung Kurt Cobain’s musical and personal legacy dry.

But apparently he hasn’t, as evidenced by the image-heavy brick that is “Cobain Unseen.” It has some basic biographical information about Cobain and attempts to address his inner life, but doesn’t really reveal much that we don’t already know. The real draw is the seemingly endless slew of pictures, letters and scraps from his all-too-brief lifetime.

After briefly covering the major events of Kurt Cobain’s childhood, Cross explores his ramshackle youth and growing musical abilities — culminating in Nirvana (whose name he says stemmed from Cobain’s love of Eastern beliefs), one of the most groundbreaking bands of the 1990s.

But Cobain’s life remained pretty tumultuous, as Cross explores quite a few aspects of Cobain’s life — his dark outlook and weird fascinations, his rebellion against his own fame and the widespread adulation of him, his marriage to the crazy rocker Courtney Love, and the birth of their daughter. And, of course, the days leading up to his early death.

Cross’s prose portions are serviceable, but it feels more like a longish magazine article instead of a biography. Some of the anecdotes are moderately interesting — such as Kurt seeing a dying suicide as a schoolboy — but most of this stuff is a glossy, rapid look over his life. Most of the time, Cross’s written stuff simply form a framework for the rest of the book.

The really good stuff is the pictures. There’s a brilliant array of personal photos — a laughing Cobain posing with his baby daughter, in concert, standing beside Japanese Jizo statues, hanging out with Courtney Love or his bandmates, playing with a steering wheel as a baby. They show him from all emotional angles — happy, miserable, rebellious, mournful, angry, sullen, quirky, and even with a faint, dark fire in his eyes.

Some are unstaged and mildly blurry, while others look like magazine photoshoots — like a beautiful picture of a blank-faced Cobain posing amongst doll heads, with a blanket of roses over his head. And there are many fragments of Cobain’s interests — odd dolls, masks, heart-shaped boxes, monkeys with batteries, tiger suits, carved-up drawing figures and audio cassettes covered in fruit stickers.

But the most unusual stuff is the assorted fold-outs and removable items — ads for Nirvana, a copy of Kurt’s high school diploma, a CD of old songs, blurry letters, X-rays, handmade cards, and even an old handwritten draft of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” It makes the book seem like less of a biography, and more like a collage of various fragments from Cobain’s lifetime.

The prose content comes second in “Cobain Unseen,” where beautiful pictures and rock’n'roll relics reveal a vibrant personality that still shines from the pages. Definitely worth checking out.

Cobain was born on the 20th of February 1967 in Hoquaim, a small town 140 kilometres south-west of Seattle. His mother was a cocktail waitress and his father was an auto mechanic. Cobain soon moved to nearby Aberdeen, a depressed and dying logging town.

Cobain was for most his childhood a sickly bronchitic child. Matters were made worse when Cobain’s parent’s divorced when he was seven and by his own account Cobain said he never felt loved or secure again. He became increasingly difficult, anti-social and withdrawn after his parent’s divorce. Cobain also said that his parent’s traumatic split fueled a lot of the anguish in Nirvana’s music.
Kurt and Baby
After his parent’s divorce Cobain found himself shuttled back and forth between various relatives and at one stage homeless living under a bridge.

When Cobain was eleven he heard and was captivated by the Britain’s Sex Pistols and after their self-destruction Cobain and friend Krist Novoselic continued to listen to the wave of British bands including Joy Division the nihilistic post-punk band that some say Nirvana are directly descended from in form of mood, melody and lyrical quality.

Cobain’s artistry and iconoclastic attitude didn’t win many friends in high school and sometimes earned him beatings from “jocks” Cobain got even by spray painting “QUEER” on their pick-up trucks. By 1985 Aberdeen was dead and Cobain’s next stop was Olympia. Cobain formed and reformed a series of bands before Nirvana came to be in 1986. Nirvana was an uneasy alliance between Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and eventually drummer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Grohl

By 1988 Nirvana were doing shows and had demo tapes going around. In 1989 Nirvana recorded their rough-edged first album Bleach Bleach – CD-Albumfor local Seattle independent label Sub-Pop

In Britain Nirvana received a lot of recognition and in 1991 their contract was bought out by Geffen, they signed to the mega-label, the first non-mainstream band to do so. Two and a half years after Nirvana’s first C.D. Bleach was released they released Nevermind, Nevermind – Japan – Vinyl-Album Nevermind – CD-Album Nevermind – Vinyl-Albuma series of different, crunching, screaming songs that along with it’s first single Smells Like Teen Spirit Smells Like Teen Spirit – CD-Singlewould propel Nirvana to mainstream stardom.

Smells Like Teen Spirit became Nirvana’s most highly acclaimed and instantly recognizable song. Not many people can decipher it’s exact lyrics but Cobain used a seductive hookline to hook the listener. Nevermind went on to sell ten million copies and make a reported $550 million (US) leaving Nirvana overnight millionaires. Cobain was shocked at the reception of his highly personal and passionate music repeatedly telling reporters that none of the band ever, ever expected anything like this. It quickly became obvious that the obsessively sickly and sensitive 24yr old was not going to cope well with the rock’n roll lifestyle. “If there was a rock star 101 course, I’d really have like to take it,” Cobain once observed. Cobain fell into heroin in the early 90′s, he said he used it as a shield against the rigorous demands of touring and to stop the pain of stomach ulcers or an irritated bowel. Through the touring and pressure Cobain continued to write his very personal acutely focused lyrics.

Cobain was distressed to find out that what he wrote and how it was interpreted could quite often be miles apart. He was appalled when he found out that Polly a heavily ironic anti-rape song had been used as background music in a real gang-rape. He later appealed to fans on the Incesticide liner Incesticide – Japan – Vinyl-Album Incesticide – CD-Albumnotes “If any of you don’t like gays or women or blacks, please leave us the fuck alone.” It was to no avail, Cobain found that as an overnight millionaire musician control was something he had very little of. Cobain also worried that his band had sold-out, that it was attracting the wrong kind of fans (i.e the type that used to beat him up.)

In February 1992 Cobain skipped off to Hawaii to marry the already pregnant Courtney Love. Later in the year Nirvana released Incesticide and in August Cobain had hospital treatment for heroin abuse. Shortly after Frances Bean Cobain was born. In early 1993 In Utero In Utero – Vinyl-Album In Utero – CD-Albumwas released into the top spot on the music charts. In Utero was widely acclaimed by the music press and it contains some of Cobain’s most passionate work. In Utero was a lot more open than Nirvana’s previous albums. Songs like All Apologies All Apologies – CD-Singleand Heart Shaped Box detailed aspects of Cobain’s sometimes shaky marriage, other songs like Scentless Apprentice detailed the agonies and struggles of Cobain’s experiences.

Nirvana embarked on a support tour and recorded and filmed an “unplugged” (acoustic) performance for MTV in November of 1993. Nirvana’s choice to honour bands and people that had influenced them and Cobain’s passionate and intense vocals especially on “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?”silenced many of their who had labeled Cobain talentless. Rumors circulated that the MTV Unplugged compilation would be Nirvana’s last album and the band were splitting up.

Cobain was a gun fanatic and always had several in his possession or in various forms of confiscation. In the northern winter of 1993-94 Nirvana embarked on an extensive European tour. Twenty concerts into the tour Cobain developed throat problems and their schedule was interrupted while he recovered. While recovering Cobain flew to Rome to join his wife who was also preparing to tour with her own band.

On March the 4th Cobain was rushed to hospital in a coma after an unsuccessful suicide bid in which he washed down about fifty prescription painkillers with champagne. The suicide bid was officially called an accident and was not even made known to close friends and associates. Several days later he returned to Seattle. Cobain’s wife, friends and managers convinced Cobain, who was still in deep distress to enter a detox program in L.A. According to a missing person’s report filed by his mother Cobain fled after only a few days of the program.

Cobain was cited in the Seattle area with a shotgun. Days later on the 5th of April he barricaded himself into the granny flat behind his mansion, put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. On Thursday April the 7th ~ two days after a medical examiner says Cobain shot himself and the day before his body was found police say Courtney Love herself was taken to hospital in L.A. for a drug overdose. Released on bail, Love checked herself into a rehab center but left soon after a friend called her the next day with news of Cobain’s death.

Cobain’s body was found when an electrician visiting the house to install a security system went round the back of the house when no one answered the front door and peered through windows. He thought he saw a mannequin sprawled on the floor until he noticed a splotch of blood by Cobain’s ear. When police broke down the door they found Cobain dead on the floor, a shotgun still pointed at his chin and on a nearby counter a suicide note written in red ink addressed to Love and the couples then 19 month old daughter Frances Bean.

The suicide note ended with the words “I love you, I love you.” Two days after Kurt Cobain’s body was found about 5,000 people gathered in Seattle for a candlelight vigil. the distraught crowd filled the air with profane chants, burnt their flannel shirts and fought with police. They also listened to a tape made by Cobain’s wife in which she read from his suicide note. Several distressed teenagers in the U.S. and Australia killed themselves. The mainstream media was lambasted for it’s lack of respect and understanding of youth culture.
